Human Resources, Safety, and Communications Report

To: Asha Riley
From: Vicky Barnes
Date: November 6, 2024
Subject: Human Resources, Safety and Communications Report

Human Resources Summary

In August, we held New Educator Training for our newly hired certificated staff. This three-day event is designed to familiarize new staff with the district and administration. On the first day, the administrative team was introduced, and Superintendent Riley discussed the district's vision and the evaluation process and led a guided bus tour of Woodland. The following local businesses generously provided gifts and raffle prizes to welcome the new educators:

  • Daddy D's BBQ
  • Dairy Queen
  • IQ Credit Union
  • Lewis River Dental
  • Oak Tree
  • Red Canoe Credit Union
  • Red Leaf Coffee
  • Safeway
  • Starbucks
  • The Corner Store
  • The Pizza Factory
  • True Value Hardware
  • Umpqua Bank
  • Woodland Eye and Vision

The next two days were spent at individual school buildings, allowing new staff to meet their coaches, peer-to-peer (P2P) mentors, and prepare classrooms and lesson plans. In September and October, I conducted individual check-ins with each new hire. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with staff feeling welcomed and gaining a clear understanding of the district's vision. However, two key improvement areas were highlighted:

  1. P2P Mentor Time: Some new hires felt additional time with their P2P mentors in the following week would have allowed for more thoughtful questions as they settled in.
  2. Curriculum Support: A lack of curriculum in middle and high school PE and an advanced high school math class presented challenges at the start of the year.

These insights will guide our planning for next year.

Additionally, I am continually engaged in interviewing and processing new substitutes, with forty-five new classified and certificated substitutes added so far this year. I also attended a two-day Law Conference through a scholarship from ESD 112, which provided valuable updates and guidance.

Safety Summary

Over the past two years, significant safety processes have been implemented, ensuring regular audits of safety procedures. Monthly protocol drills are conducted, and after-action reviews have led to adjustments in responses and improved business practices. One such enhancement involved the Secure protocol, where two different response options were identified depending on the event type, allowing us to fine-tune the system further.

Each year, I meet with principals and their building safety representatives to address concerns and questions. The first safety meeting of this year is scheduled for November 7, 2024, allowing buildings to raise any immediate issues. As I transition this responsibility to the new facility director, I am confident in the progress and future improvements of our safety systems.

Communications

Two "Riley Reports" have been created and posted on YouTube. These brief videos aim to provide families with helpful information. Both videos are accessible via the district’s Facebook page and a link sent through Talking Points.

  • : Introduction of Superintendent Riley, outlining the district's top communication priorities – 312 views.
  • : Focus on safety, showing where to find safety information on the district website – 436 views.

These videos aim to enhance communication with families and community members, fostering better-informed engagement.
