The following policies were presented for first reading on November 25th and are being presented for final approval.
4210- Regulation of Dangerous Weapons on School Premises
The WSSDA has recommended substantive modifications to this policy. These changes are largely in response to a Washington State court decision related to the City of Seattle's ban of firearms in city parks. This is known as the "Chan Decision". The details are found in the attached WSSDA Policy News.
4215 - Use of Tobacco, Nicotine Products and Delivery Devices
Washington State increased the age for Tobacco Use and possession from eighteen to twenty-one years of age. Modification to this policy recognizes this change.
5404 - Family, Medical., and Maternity Leave
Washington State is implementing State Paid Family, and Medical Leave in 2020. This policy amendment adds the State Paid Leave to the Federal Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
6112 - Rental or Lease of District Real Property
The WSSDA Recommendation allows the option of school districts to include language in the second paragraph that bans firearms on the property that the school district leases or rents to others. The district currently leases two parcels. One that houses the Cowlitz-Skamania Fire Dept next to Yale School and another leased to the Yale Valley Library District, also next to Yale School. I did not believe that this language would be particularly beneficial to the district and believe that it could be potentially problematic to the Fire Dept. The other change is the inclusion of a paragraph that is reflective of (b).
