RE: Student Representative Report
Hot Topics:
High-school time change 2019-2020
Some students were very taken aback by the decision, they didn’t even know it was being decided.
Students wish they had had a voice in the conversation, just so the board and administration would know what the student concerns are and be able to take those into account when making the final decision:
Students are concerned with the late ending of school and how that will greatly impact the education of students who participate in sports and after-school clubs.
Students are frustrated that the 0
period
will not be accessible to all students, only ones that have the transportation available.
Starting the school day later, though proven that students do better starting later, is contradicting as athletes (who are the ones that stay up the latest doing homework/getting home late from activities) will be the ones taking advantage of the 0 periods the most, therefore, still not getting the rest “recommended”.”
Students in sports are concerned
at
how late they will have to be up now that practices will start later and they will still have lots of homework.
Students that take the 0
period
and
dont
have a 6th will not have access to advisory (which would allegedly be after 5th), therefore will be out of the loop.
Overall, we as students are asking that to become a part of the decision making cycle on issues that will impact the students at the
highschool
. Something as simple as inviting students to the table to have a voice would be extremely appreciated by us!
Wifi at the school
A student during an ASB meeting brought up an issue that she has been having with the speed of the school wifi and how it is affecting her working on the school
chromebooks
.
We brought this issue up to Shoup & Uhlenkott during our meeting and they said they would talk to Steve Rippl about it.
Making Prom Juniors and Seniors Only
To create a different culture at Prom, a more formal and “Upperclassman-focused” feeling, ASB introduced the idea of making Prom Juniors and Seniors only unless escorted by an upperclassman.
ASB has had many meetings with Mr. Uhlenkott about this issue. Though the admin
don’t
feel this would be a good decision to make, ASB has offered some compromises such as the upperclassman only voting on
court
. The conversation is continuing...
Making Dances Drug &
Alcohol Free
There were a few issues at Tolo this year with unwelcome substances being used during the dance
ASB has been brainstorming with Mr. Uhlenkott about ways we can avoid this happening in the future and at Prom

Challenge Day
February 20th
150 students and staff members participated in this all day event where we all learned to not judge others for we don’t really know what they have been through. It brought the culture of WHS closer and opened the eyes of the students who were able to attend. It was truly a great day.
