RE: Woodland Intermediate Report

Woodland Intermediate School is a busy and vibrant place for students to learn. Great things happen inside the classrooms and across the school every day!

  • On March 1st the WIS welcomed a mob of children and families for our annual Dr. Seuss/Woodland Reads event. It is estimated that over 300 students and their families were in attendance.   Fifth-grade teacher Patty Cutler led a team of faculty and staff to organize and host this great event.   The highlight for many students was the opportunity to build a take-home craft project that was gifted to us from Home Depot in Longview.   Not only did they donate 290 wood-block calendar and other craft kits, but they also provided 3 volunteers to help families with the project.
  • On March 2nd the official kickoff of this year’s Woodland Reads book, , The students have read the book and have their culminating assembly on Friday, March 23. The special guest for the assembly will be a who has run the Iditarod Dog Sled race three times.  You may know him.
  • The second-grade teaching team spent two days in Seattle two weeks ago engaging in training from a nationally recognized expert in reading instruction, Anita Archer. They came back energized about opportunities to enhance instruction in phonemic awareness for our growing readers.
  • On March 14 we had a “Coffee and Conversations.” I was joined by about a dozen parents, and we discussed school safety.   The feedback received from parents was that folks felt we were doing a good job of ensuring the safety of children, particularly with all of the remodeling done in the last 4 years.  Our next “Coffee and Conversations” is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, April 10. We will invite parents, staff, and others to meet the finalist candidates for WIS principal.
  • Next week is conference week and we will be aiming to meet with the parents of each of the students we serve. We will also be encouraging parents to take a few minutes to complete a survey to provide feedback that will guide our work.
